Criminals are opportunistic. Lighting, cameras, street furniture, placement of personel: all these can massively impact on how soft a target a public space appears to the potential offender.
If you operate in a retail or leisure environment, offering a sense of complete security is a critical part of customer welcome.
We call what we do "Intuitive Security" because it's based on:
Security is still a grudge spend. But people will not — cannot — take part freely in work or leisure activities unless they feel secure.
A secure environment is the baseline. It's very simple: a safe environment is the baseline for the customer welcome that is essential if people are to spend.
NHS hospitals are in a unique position. They are open 24/7 and they are open to everyone. Drunks, offenders, the mentally ill: all these are legitimate users.
It would be safe to say that the majority of people using a hospital at any time are preoccupied and anxious. Because of this they are particularly vulnerable to theft. Therapeutic staff need to keep their attention on their jobs, not on the potential for crime.
So hospitals present a particularly challenging security problem. Security has to be designed in, with every tool at our disposal. Lighting, cameras, even the arrangement of signage, can reduce the attraction to the opportunistic offender.
A workplace very soon becomes a home from home. However many times they are reminded, workers in public buildings tend to relax in familiar surroundings and let their guard down. When the public is entitled to move around a building (council offices, for example) the potential for theft of personal possessions and equipment is very great.
